It was not until 1913 that the distance was standardised at 2 miles and times prior to that date are of little significance. Similarly, as the number of hurdles was not standardised until 1931, times can only be compared on an equal basis from 1932 onwards. The steeplechase went metric in 1954, conforming to the international standard of 3000m.
